「へえー！」
私は驚いて声をあげた。今まで、近いからとか楽そうだからとか、いろいろな理由を聞いてきたが、そのな理由でコンビニで働き始めた人に会うのは初めだった。
「でも失敗だったな。ろくな相手がいない。若いのは遊んでそうな奴等ばかりだし、あとは年増だ」
「まあ、コンビニは学生のアルバイトさんが多いですし、そんなに適齢期の人はいないですよ」
「客にはまあまあなのが結構いるけど、高飛車な女が多いですよ。この辺は大きい会社ばかりだから、そういうところで働いている女は威張り散らしていて駄目だ」
白羽さんは誰に向かって喋っているのか、壁にある「お中元目標達成を目指そ！」というポスターを見つめながら口を動かし続けている。
「あいつら、自分と同じ会社の男にばっかり色目をつかって、僕とは目を合わせようともしない、大体、縄文時代から女はそうなんだ。若くて可愛い村一番の娘は力が強くて狩りが上手い男のものになっていく。強い遺伝子が残っていって、残り物は残り物同士で慰め合う道しか残されていない。現代社会なんてものは幻想で、（７３）僕たちは縄文時代と大して変わらない世界に生きているんだ。大体、男女半時だなんだと言いながら。。。」
「へえー！」
I exclaimed in surprise.

Until now, I had heard various reasons from people for starting to work at a convenience store, like it's nearby or seems easy, but this was the first time I met someone who had started working at a convenience store for such reasons.
「でも失敗だったな。ろくな相手がいない。若いのは遊んでそうな奴等ばかりだし、あとは年増だ」
"But it was a failure. There are no decent partners. It's just young people who seem like they're fooling around, and the rest are older women."
「まあ、コンビニは学生のアルバイトさんが多いですし、そんなに適齢期の人はいないですよ」
"Well, convenience stores have a lot of student part-timers, so there aren't that many people in their prime."
「客にはまあまあなのが結構いるけど、高飛車な女が多いですよ。この辺は大きい会社ばかりだから、そういうところで働いている女は威張り散らしていて駄目だ」
"Well, there are quite a few decent customers, but there are a lot of arrogant women. Since there are only big companies around here, women who work in those places tend to act high and mighty."
白羽さんは誰に向かって喋っているのか、壁にある「お中元目標達成を目指そ！」というポスターを見つめながら口を動かし続けている。
While talking, Shiraha-san continued to move her lips, but it was unclear who she was talking to. She was gazing at a poster on the wall that said, "Aim to Achieve Your Midsummer Gift Goals!"
