翌朝出勤すると、店がいつもと違う、緊張した雰囲気に包まれていた。自動ドアから店に入ってすぐのところで、常連の男性客が、怯えたように雑誌コーナーの方を見ていた。いつもコーヒーを買っていく女性が、私とすれ違うように早足で店から出て行き、パン売り場の前では男性客が二人、ヒソヒソと話している。一体どうしたのだろうかと客の視線の先を見ると、クタビラたスーツ姿の中年の男性を、皆が目で追いっていると気付いた。
彼は店を歩き回り、いろんな客に声をかけている様子だ。内容をよく聞いてみると、どうやら客に注意をしているようだった。靴が汚れている男性に甲高い声で、「ほらあなた、そこ！床を汚さないでくださいね」と言い、チョコレートを見ている男性に、「あー！駄目ですよ、せっかく来ちゃんと並んでいるのにぐちゃぐちゃにして！」と叫んでいる。皆、自分が次に声をかけられたらどうしようと、戸惑いながら遠巻に男性の動きを見守っていた。
レジは混んでいて、店長はゴルフの宅配便の受付をしていて手が離せず、ダット君が必死にレジを打っていた。レジには行列ができていて、男性は並び方が乱れて（６３）いる客に近付き、「ちゃんと壁に沿って一列に並んでください、ほら！」と言った。
