社員の声に前を向くと、かごにセールのおにぎりをたくさん入れた客が近づいてくる所だった。
「いらっしゃいませ！」
私はさっきと同じトーンで声を張りあげて会釈をし、かごを受け取った。
その時、私は、初めて、世界の部品になることができたのんだった。私は、今、自分が生まれたと思った。世界の正常な部品としての私が、この日、確かに誕生したのだった。
私はたまに、電卓で、そのひから過ぎた時間を数えてみることがある。スマイルマート日色町駅前店は一日も休むことなく、灯りを灯したまま回転し続けている。先日、お店で１９回目の５月一日を迎え、あれから１５万７８００時間が経過した。私は３６歳になり、お店も、店員としての私も、１８歳になった。あの日研修で一緒に学んだ定員は、もう一人も残っていない。けれど私は変わらず店員のままだ。
私がアルバイトを始めたとき、家族はとても喜んでくれた。大学を出て、そのままアルバイトを続けると行った時も、ほとんど世界と接点（p２６）がなかた少し前の私に比べば大変な成長だと、応援してくれた。
