最初の客は、年配の女性だった。つえをついた女性が一番に入り、おにぎりやお弁当の割引のクーポンを持った客が大勢、それに売れて店に流れ込んでくる光景を、私は呆然と眺めていた。
「古倉さん、ほら声出して！」
社員に言われ、私は我に返った。
「いらっしゃいませ！本日、オープニングセール中です！いかがでしょうか！」
店の中で行こ「声掛け」も、実際に「お客様」がいる店内では、全く違う響きで反響した。
「お客様」がこんなに音を立てる生き物だとは、私は知らなかった。反響する促音に、声、お菓子のパッケージをかごに放り込む音、冷えた飲み物が入っている扉をあける音。私は客の出す音に圧倒されながらも、負けじと、「いらっしゃいませ！」と繰り返し叫んだ。
まるで作り物ではないかと思うほど綺麗に並んでいた食べ物やお菓子の山が、「お客様」の手であっという間に崩されていく。どこか偽物じめていた店が、その手でどんどん生々しく姿を変えていくようだった。
