お金に慣れるためにとレジの中には本物のお客が入っていたが、レシートには「トレーニング」と大きく印字されていたし、相手は同じ制服を着たアルバイト仲間だし、なんとなくお買いものごっこをしているようだった。大学生、パンドをやっている男の子、フリーター、主婦、夜学の高校生、いろいろな人が、同じ制服を着て、均一な「店員」と言う生き物に作り直されていくのが、面白かった。その日の研修が終わると、皆、制服を脱いで元の状態に戻った。他の生き物に着替えているようにも感じられた。
二週間の研修の後、ついた店がオープンする日になった。その日、私は朝から店にいた。白くて何もなかった棚には、所狭しと商品が並べられていた。社員の手によって隙間なく並べられたそれらは、どこが作り物めいて感じられた。
オープンの時間が来て、社員がドアを上げた瞬間、私は「本物だ」と思った。研修で想定していたが架空の客ではなく、「本物」だ。いろいろな人がいる。オフィス街だからスーツや制服し姿の客ばかり頭に浮かべていたが、最初に入ってきたのは、（P22)皆で配った割引のチラシを持った、住民風の集団だった。
