最初にレジに来たのは、店に最初に足を踏み入れたのは同じ、上品そうな年配の女性だった。
私はマニュアルを反芻しながらrじに立っていた。女性はシュークリームとサンドイッチと、おにぎりがいくつか入ったかごをレジに置いた。
一人目の客がレジに来たことで、カウンターの中にいる店員の背筋がさらに伸びる。社員の注目を集めながら、私は研修で習った通りに、女性客に向かって一礼した。
「いらっしゃいませ！」
研修で見せられたビデオの女性と全く同じトーンで、私は声を出した。
かごを受け取り、研修で習った通りにバーコードをスキャンし始めた。新人の私の横についている社員が、素早く商品を袋に入れていく。
「ここは朝、何時からやってるの？」女性が尋ねた。
「ええと、今日は１０時からです！あの、これからはずっとやっています！」
研修で習っていない質問にまだうまく答えられない私を、社員が素早くフォローした。
