天五は首を振った。「いえ、大丈夫です。もう落ち着きました」
小松は上着のポケットからマルボロの箱を取り出し、口に煙草をくわえ、店のマッチで火をつけた。それから腕時計にちらりと目をやった。
「それで、何の話をしていたんでしたっけ？」と天五は尋ねた。早く平常に戻らなくてはならない。
「ええと。俺たち何を話してたんだっけな」と小松は言って目を宙に向け、少し考えた。あるいは考えるふりをした。どちらかは天五にもわからない。小松の動作やしゃべり方には少なからず演技的な部分がある。「うん、そうだ。ふかえりって女の子の話をしかけてたんだ。それと「空気さなぎ」について」
天五は肯いた。ふかえりと「空気さなぎ」の話だ。それについて小松に説明しかけたところで「発作」がやってきって、はんしが中断した。天五は鞄の中から原稿のコピーの東を取り出し、テープルの上に置いた.
原稿の上に手を載せ、その感触を今一度たしかめた。
「電話でも簡単に話ましたけど、この「空気さなぎ」の一番の実点は誰の真似もしていない、というところです。新人の作品にしては珍しく、何かみたいになりたいという部分がありません」、天五は慎重に言葉を選んで言った「確かに文章は荒削りだし、言葉の選び方も稚拙です。大体題名からして、蛹とまゆを混同しています。その気になれば、欠陥は他にもいくらでも並べ立てられるでしょう。

Komatsu took out a box of Marlboros from his coat pocket, put a cigarette in his mouth, and lit it with a match from the store.

"So, what were we talking about?" Tengo asked. He needed to get back to normal quickly.

"Uh, what were we talking about?" Komatsu said, looking up into the air, thinking for a moment.
