炊飯器はずっと保温に鳴っていて開けるとご飯があり、眼が覚めるそれを口の中のに押し込んで、また押入れに戻って眠るような生活だったのだ。
顔を合わせた流れで、なんとなく、一緒に食事をする運びとなった。白羽さんが冷凍したおかずは、シュウマイとチキンナゲットだった。皿に盛ったそれを無言で口に運ぶ。
自分が何のために栄養をとっているのかもわからなかった。咀嚼してドロドロになったご飯とシュウマイを私はいつまでも飲み込むことができなかった。
その日は、私の初めての面接だった。派遣とはいえ、36歳までアルバイトをしていた私が面接に漕ぎ着けることができたのは、奇跡のようなことだと白羽さんは得意に言った。コンビニを辞めてから、１ヶ月近く経っていた。
私は１０年上前にクリーニングに出したきりになっていたパンスーツを着て、髪のてを整えていた。
部屋の外に出ること自体、久しぶりだった。バイトをしながら僅かながらに貯めていたお金も、だいぶ減ってきていた。
「さあ古倉さん、行きますよ」
