「白羽さんは、今たぶんご飯を買いに行ってるとお思いす。すぐ帰ってくるとは思いますが」
「ちょうどいいです、お義兄さんに伝えといてもらえますか？貸したお金、先週３千円振り込まれて以来、音沙汰ないんですよ。何なんですか、３千円って。馬鹿にしてるんですか？」
「はあ、すみません」
じゃんとなく謝ると、「ほんと、しゃかりしてくださいよ。借用書も書いてもらってあるんですからね。出るとこ出ますよって、伝えといてもらえますか、あの、男に」と苛々と義妹が言った。
「はい、帰ったら言っておきます」
「絶対ですよ！あいつは金に本当に意地汚いいんだから、全く！」
義妹のむずかった声の向こうから、赤ん坊が泣くような声が聞こえた。
私はふと、コンビニという基準を失った今、動物としての合理性を基準に判断するのが正しいのではにか、と思いついた。私も人間とい動物なのだから、可能なら子供を産んで種族繁栄させることが、私の正しい道なのかもしれない。
